World witnessing first partial solar eclipse this year

Tribune News Network - Doha :

The solar eclipses occur when the moon passes between the Sun and the Earth so that the Sun is fully or partially covered. This can only happen before a new Moon phase; when the Sun and Moon are in conjunction as seen from the Earth. The moon blocks the light of the sun and a shadow of the moon is cast over the earth's surface.

The first solar eclipse of this year will be occur on Thursday February 15; where its greatest time will be occurs with the time of conjunction of the new crescent of Hijric month "Jumada II 1439H".

Qatar Calendar House (QCH) announced.  The solar eclipse will be appearing as a partial solar eclipse type; where Moon will hide part of solar disk, the Moon will hide approximately 60% of full solar disk at the greatest point of this partial solar eclipse.

Dr. Beshir Marzouk (Astronomer expert at QCH) said. Dr. Beshir Marzouk added: Partial solar eclipse will be seen from southern part of South America, South Pole, parts of Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean.

While partial solar eclipse will not be seen from Qatar, countries of Gulf Cooperation Council and all countries of Arabic area.

But they can follow up solar eclipse through a live broadcast from NASA website or through NASA's channel on YouTube.      First Partial solar eclipse of this year will be start at 9:55 Pm Doha local time, and the greatest point of the partial solar eclipse will be occur at 11:51 Pm Doha local time, while it will be end  at 1:47 Am on Friday, February 16.

The duration of all solar eclipse phases will be three hours and fifty-two minutes from start until end partial eclipse. Dr. Beshir Marzouk mentioned, this partial solar eclipse is one of three partial solar eclipses will occur this year, the next partial eclipse will be occurring on July 13, while the last partial eclipse this year will be occurring on August 11, 2018.

For more information, there are four types of solar eclipse: total, partial, annular and hybrid, moreover during solar eclipses do not look to the sun by the naked eye (must using eclipse glasses or filters), while you can look to the moon with naked during lunar eclipses.

Solar and lunar eclipses are important phenomena because it validates astronomical calculations; where the solar eclipses happen before first of Hijric months (before new crescent), while lunar eclipse happens at the middle of Hijric months (at full moon phase).
