United Nation’s Special Rapporteur on the right to education Dr Koumbou Boly Barry on Saturday said she was examining the violations committed by countries imposing a blockade on Qatar against its students studying in those countries.
Barry commended Qatar’s focus on educational development and its efforts to promote it all over the world. She was addressing a seminar hosted by Qatar University and organised by the National Committee for Human Rights (NHRC) on the role of UN rapporteurs in protecting human rights. The seminar was moderated by NHRC member Dr Mohammed Said al Kuwari.
Barry said she had met with those affected by the blockade's violations during her visit to Doha.
All countries in the world, except one, have signed the International Covenant on Civil, Economic and Social Rights. Its mechanism, ratified 70 years ago, promotes the freedoms and dignity of the people of the world. She said her duties involve asking countries that ratified the covenant why they are not honouring their commitments when they do so.
Barry highlighted the existence of around one billion people across the world, who are deprived of their right to education. In this context, Qatar — which ensures basic education is given to all children of school-going age — is doing a great job, she added.
Barry also highlighted the success stories in countries such as Burkina Faso, Niger and Ivory Coast, which in one decade have achieved what some countries couldn't in 60 years, making clear progress in gender equality in education and helping families educate their children and people with special needs.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Karim Khazrawi praised the commitment of Qatar in enhancing human rights and coordinating with the designated bodies in that regard.
Qatar responded to the recommendations made regarding expatriate workers’ welfare, he said, noting abolishing the kafala and the exit permit systemswas generating positive responses from various quarters.
