The Amiri Diwan announced that on the occasion of NationalSport Day, which is marked annually on the second Tuesday of February each year, Tuesday (February 12 and Jumada Al-Akhir 7, 1440) will be an official holiday.
Ministries and public institutions have lined up a series of activities to mark the NationalSport Day on Tuesday in furtherance of the Amiri Decree No 80 of 2011’s objective to develop a sporting culture at the grass-roots level in Qatar.
While some agencies in Qatar have joined hands with others to organise joint events, others are going solo by utilising the space and amenities at public parks and clubs to engage hundreds of thousands of residents and citizens in day-long sporting activities.
The General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice, has chosen the Al-Markhiya Sports Club for its set of activities.
The Ministry of Interior will host a variety of activities at the Qatar Sports Club and police warehouses. Similarly, the Ministry of Education will hold activities at Tariq Bin Ziyad and Al Yarmook Boys School.
While the Diplomatic Club will be the venue for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ programmes, the Supreme Judicial Council will organise events in Lusail City on Tuesday.
The Ministry of Transport and Communications, in cooperation with the General Authority for Aviation, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, Qatar Rail, Mwani Qatar and Karwa, will organise activities at the Aspire Park.
Qatar Foundation is planning a raft ofevent at four locations in the Education City — the Oxygen Park, the Celebration Square, the Green Zone and Students Corner.
Qatar University is also preparing this year to celebrate the NationalSport Day in cooperation with Qatar Charity and the Planning and Statistics Authority on its campus.
This year’s NationalSport Day (NSD) on Tuesday promises to provide a unique experience to people in Qatar with new additions such as a social networking app and fun events like balloon race.
The app, which is under development, will let people know of the various activities taking place on Tuesday and team up according to sporting preferences. It will also let you book tickets for your favourite shows and games and help you choose which event to attend.
The sports day activities would be more vibrant and widespread this time, said Abdul Rahman al Dosari, the chairman of the joint committee on NationalSport Day and president of Qatar Sports Federation for All (QSFA).
Besides Katara, Corniche and Aspire Park, sporting events will be held in almost all major public parks, clubs and campuses. The Al Bidda Park, for instance, would see innovative events like fun race or balloon race on Tuesday.
“We are keen to have events throughout the country so that the whole country turns into a playground on Tuesday,” Dosari said.
One of the major highlights of the day would be the smartphone app, Dosari said, adding: “This application is under continuous development. Our aim is to make it the first electronic platform not only in Qatar but also in the region.”
