The Al Khor Highway, which will cut the travel time between Doha and Al Khor from 45 minutes to 18, will be incrementally opened to traffic by March. So far, 75 percent of the project has been completed.
The road will be fully open before the end of 2019. Once open, the highway will also reduce the travel time between Lusail and Al Bayt stadiums to 15 minutes.
The highway is going to be a huge relief for motorists, especially daily commuters as it shortens the driving distance from the south of the Golf Club to Al Bayt Stadium to 34 kilometres.
Tekfen Construction Company is implementing the road at a cost of QR7.5 billion.
The road has 34 kilometres of pedestrian and bicycle tracks, which is 6 metres in width. It can accommodate 10,000 vehicles per hour instead of 4,000 vehicles per hour.
The route includes five tracks, two emergency tracks, a special rail track for Qatar Rail and 42 pedestrian and bicycle tunnels.
Once completed, the highway will serve 15 residential areas between Doha and Al Khor, such as Umm Qarn, Samisma, Rawdat Al Hammam, The Pearl-Qatar and Lusail.
