Internationally renowned South African comedian and Daily Show host Trevor Noah tickled the funny bones of the audience at the Qatar National Convention Centre in Doha last Friday.
Through his performance, the comedian connected with a diverse crowd, with jokes tailored to various cultures. The comedian made people laugh with the way he explained the region’s soaring temperatures during summer, about his life in South Africa and Africa; about American and Canadian leaders; as well as the rich Indian culture especially its curry.
Noah tackled a number of social issues in a funny way especially how children should not travel in business class. He also talked about how he can speak different languages.
Before he took to the stage, he visited the National Museum of Qatar, which, he said, was “gorgeous”. He also praised the Qatar Airways services.
This was the second time Trevor was visiting Qatar. He first came to Qatar in 2017.
Qatar’s stand-up comedian Hamad al Marri warmed up the stage before Trevor took to the stage.
The event was part of the Doha Comedy Festival organised by Social Studio and supported by Qatar National Tourism Council as part of the Summer in Qatar Programme.
Speaking to Qatar Tribune, South African Ambassador to Qatar HE Faizel Moosa said the world renowned stand-up comedian never disappoints with his performance. “We truly enjoyed the show. Noah makes the issues lighter for people to laugh. His prejudice makes you laugh at yourself!”
The envoy said Noah made people laugh about the serious world events because he comments on them on a funny way. “Trevor’s comments were relevant to these times. He makes people laugh,” he said.
Moosa said he was happy for being invited to the show. “Noah has made South Africa and the entire Africa proud. The entire world watches him. He is an African superstar,” he noted.
The envoy said he was grateful for the support Noah received from Qataris and expatriates alike in Qatar. “The support was really overwhelming. The show was sold out.”
According to Moosa, such events help Qatar and other countries to make things lighter to engage in.
He said South Africa has great talents like Miriam Makeba, and would love to bring such renowned talents to Qatar. “We would like to bring more of these talents to Qatar.”
Meanwhile, the embassy said they were in discussion with other African ambassadors on how to bring top African artistes to Qatar. “Qataris are very receptive to international talents.”
The ambassador praised the event for being so well-organised.
“As always, Noah makes people laugh. One cannot get enough of his jokes. This was the first time I was attending his live show. I have only been seeing him on television and I am so excited to see him. He tackled serious issues in a funny way,” said a Nigerian fan.
Joy, a Kenyan fan, said, “I loved the way he explained about the Indian curry and the culture. Through his performance I was able to understand other cultures better. His shows bring people together.”
