Qatar has a strategic stockpile of food supplies that are sufficient to meet the needs of citizens and residents for a long period of time, a top official of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) has said.
“There is no need for panic or anxiety. One can buy as much food items as one needs. There’s no need to rush to commercial complexes and markets to buy goods for the sake of stocking up. Everything is available in abundance,” Sheikh Jassim bin Jabor al Thani, Assistant Undersecretary for Consumer Affairs at MoCI, said.
He said the ministry is working within a strategic plan to secure the flow of imports to the local market in sufficient quantities that are of high quality at appropriate prices.
Highlighting the importance of consumer culture, he called on the people to buy food and ration as per one’s need only.
“The panic buying we saw days ago was not needed. In fact, it does not reflect the reality on the ground at all. All the commodities are very much available in the market,” he said.
“Just visit a consumer complex, it’s there for all to see – everything is available in abundance,” he noted.
He said: “Our advice to consumers is to choose the right time to buy and not to store in large quantities because these commodities may eventually be destroyed without being used.”
He said the ministry is following up with retailers and wholesalers on a daily basis to note any rise in commodity prices. He said all the national products are largely available in the markets.
“We have strategic commodity stocks. Consumer groups have contracts with suppliers to meet the needs of various commodities. They can even resort to alternative sources in case there’s any problem,” he said.
