A Qatar Chamber-led meeting held in Doha on Wednesday sought ways to ensure uninterrupted flow of food and other essential supplies to people in the locked-down area of Industrial Area.
On March 17, the government locked down a portion of Industrial Area, where a large number of people have tested positive for Covid-19, for a preliminary two-week period.
The meeting, attended by representatives of several companies in the food sector and members of the Qatar Chamber’s (QC) Food Security and Environment Committee, also discussed several key issues impacting the nation-wide supply chain. QC’s Dr Saif bin Ali al Hajari and Committee Chairperson Mohamed bin Ahmed al Obaidli spearheaded the meeting.
The mechanisms facilitating the flow of goods from ports to Industrial Area and their distribution from there with appropriate measures to guarantee the interests of merchants and consumers were key parts of the discussions.
Besides, the meeting saw the floating of a proposal guaranteeing the availability of food products in the market.
Stressing the importance of raising awareness among workers in the food sector about the means of combating coronavirus, the meeting called on food companies to instruct their employees to strictly comply with the directives of the Ministry of Public Health on coronavirus mitigation.
It also reviewed ways of enhancing confidence on the national products especially poultry, dairy, vegetables, fruit and fish.
Committee Chairperson Obaidli praised the precautionary measures taken by the government to curb the outbreak, particularly those of the Ministry of Public Health, which included sterilising trucks and checking drivers passing through Industrial Area.
He stressed the private sector was keen on ensuring the flow of goods, services and food and agricultural products to the local market and actively contribute towards the national efforts to arrest the spread of Covid-19.
Obaidli said the Saudi-led blockade of Qatar helped the private sector in the country gain experience in dealing with and overcoming a crisis.
Dr Hajari said the Environment Committee is prepared to receive all inquiries and proposals for prompt actions and solution.
He said the committee would address all issues related to streamlining procedures for investors and businessmen.
