THERE'S an old saying, attributed to the British Foreign Office in colonial days: "Keep the Persians hungry, and the Arabs fat." For the British - then the stewards of Persian destiny - that was the formula for maintaining calm; it still is for Saudi Arabian leaders ...

Thai PM in Japan to boost investor confidence

DPA

BANGKOK THAI Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra departed for Japan on Tuesday in the hope of bolstering investor confidence shaken by last year’s devastating monsoon floods.

“This visit will improve relations with Japan in all sectors,” Yingluck said in Bangkok.

In addition to promoting economic ties, Yingluck said she plans to offer condolences to the relatives of Hiroyuki Muramoto, a cameraman for Reuters news agency who died during political clashes in Bangkok in April 2010.

She also plans to visit and offer condolences in Miyaki Prefecture, which was among the hardesthit areas in last year’s tsunami disaster.

Yingluck’s three-day visit includes an audience with Japanese Crown Prince Naruhito and a meeting with her counterpart, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda.

Yingluck said she would assure business leaders that her government is doing everything necessary to prevent a recurrence of last year’s floods, which caused heavy damage to Japanese factories in industrial zones north of Bangkok.

The floods prompted several firms to relocate to other countries, causing thousands of Thai workers to lose their jobs.

Yingluck is also scheduled to take part in a ceremony marking the 125th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
