Big fanfare planned during SOP finals

DOHA THE finals of the fifth School Olympic Program (SOP) will be marked at the Aspire Dome with great pomp and show. The organising committee has planned magic shows, music and sand artwork to thrill not only the young participants but their families as well.
This year’s theme for the SOP is Sport and Family.
Mohamad Issa al Fadala, Executive Director of SOP, informed at a press conference on Monday that the finals of the girls would be held at the Aspire Academy on April 5,while the finals of the boys are scheduled one day later.
Those present during the press conference included Khalid Harzan al Malki, Assistant Director at Supreme Council of Education, Mohamad al Malki, Assistant Director of Communications at Supreme Council for Family affairs and Ali al Hitmi, Secretary General of Qatar Schools Sports Federation.
On the final two days of the fifth SOP, about 2,000 boys and girls will figure in different events.
“The organising committee has made elaborate arrangements for sports and entertainments.
Bahraini singer Hala al Turk will perform on both the days. Saudi Arabian magician Ahmad al Bayed will also hold his famous show. Omani sand artist Maryam will also display her art at the closing ceremony on both the days,” added Fadala.
The fifth SOP, which kicked off on October 6, 2011, has individual and team events in nine sports for both boys and girls. The team sports are football, volleyball, handball and basketball, while the individual contests are being organised in swimming, athletics, fencing, table tennis and gymnastics. The SOP has also organised contests in paralympic games (athletics and table tennis for boys and athletics for girls).
Besides, the shows and events, various sports federations and organisations will put up their booths in the Aspire Zone to create more awareness for health and sports. On April 5 and 6, there are contests in face painting, statues & mimes, stilt man, PS3 games, costumes, mini golf, shooting, puzzles, basketball, football and handball.
