DOHA ONE hundred and fifteen employees of Aljabor Cement Industries Co participated in the company’s initiative to clean up the shore of Sealine Beach in Mesaieed recently.
The initiative was part of the worldwide “Together for Communities” endeavour by Holcim to give back something to the community where the company operates.
The employees were divided into three groups and each group was tasked to clean the beach a day a week within three consecutive weeks. A total of 920 manhours was spent in the community service.
Employees from both, the head office and the Mesaieed plant, actively participated by picking up garbage left behind by beach users, campers or those washed to the beach.
They covered a three-kilometre stretch of the shore collecting a total of 5,431 kilogrammes of trash. The staff picked up lots of plastic bottles, plastic bags, soft drink tins, bottles, carpets, pieces of wood and metal scraps.
One participant said he felt very much accomplished for being given an opportunity to volunteer in an activity like this since it was important to keep the environment clean.
“It is important also for people to realise that they should be responsible for the trash they generate. Such an activity is a clear eye-opener,” he said.
Aljabor CEO Urs Rolland Straub said, “As part of the Holcim Group ‘Centennial Celebration’, volunteering for a good cause in the name of Holcim has proved to an excellent way to engage our employees in contributing to the sustainable development of Qatar. ‘Together for Communities’ is our way of giving back a little something to the community where our operations are embedded. At the same time it represents the contribution of Aljabor Cement to the worldwide initiative of Holcim to engage its 80,000 employees to work one day for the community.” With the huge success achieved, Aljabor plans to return to the beach and do this activity on a regular basis.
