to Spanish clay |
RAFAEL Nadal prepared on Monday
to move from one record-setting week
to the next as the eight-time Monte
Carlo champion settled in as top seed
at his home Barcelona Open.
Less than 24 hours after crushing
Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-1 for his eighth
straight trophy on the clay of the principality,
Nadal was outlining his
chances of claiming a seventh in
Barcelona, the hotbed of Spanish tennis.
"Beating the number one is special,
but Novak (mourning the loss of his
grandfather last week) made more
errors than usual and I took advantage
of that. I did have a few mistakes with
my backhand though," said Nadal,

drought at Texas Open |
FORMER British Open
champion Ben Curtis won
his first US PGA Tour title
since 2006 on Sunday, holding

Curtis, the surprise winner
of the British Open in
2003, birdied the par-five
18th for an even-par 72 on
the day and a nine-under
total of 279.
"It´s been a tough couple
of years," a teary Curtis said
as he struggled for composure.
"Just played through
it, that´s all you can do."
Curtis´s lacklustre results
had seen him lose his full
playing privileges on the US
tour.
In 2011, he failed to finish
in the top 10 even once for
the first time since he joined
the tour in 2003.

in Europe as Chelsea visits |
CHELSEA is bracing for a
Barcelona onslaught on
Tuesday as the wounded
Catalans bid to recover from
domestic disappointment by
reaching their third
Champions League final in
four seasons.
The holders — stunned 1-0
by Chelsea in last week´s semifinal
first leg — completed a
week to forget on Saturday
when a 2-1 defeat to Real
Madrid at Camp Nou effectively
handed the domestic
title to their bitter rivals.
Chelsea will hope to exploit
any lingering hangover from
Saturday´s traumatic reverse
to Real as they attempt to
avenge their agonising elimination
to Barca at the same
stage three years ago.
