German Marshall Plan
EUROPEAN leaders seemed to understand, at least until recently, that even a partial breakdown of the eurozone would have a devastating economic and political impact on departing countries and on the European Union as a whole. But while they have repeatedly committed to ...
THE HONEST TRUTH ABOUT DISHONESTY
IN the 1970s, the gift shop at the Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts was an informal affair. It was staffed by about 300 mostly elderly volunteers, and there were cash drawers instead of registers. The problem was that of the shop's $400,000 in annual revenue, somebody was ...

Qatari teams unveil fuel-efficient cars

JOSEPH VARGHESE

DOHA THREE teams from Qatar will take part in this year’s Shell Ecomarathon (SEM), one of the world’s most challenging competitions for students, with their ultra energy efficient vehicles. Two of the teams are from Qatar University (QU) and one from TAMUQ.

On Tuesday the teams unveiled their vehicles at the Shell research centre at the Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP). The vehicles have been designed and assembled by the students and faculty members of the universities and all parts except the engines have been made in Qatar. This is the second time students from Qatar are taking part in the competition. One QU vehicle runs on battery and the other on GTL. The TAMUQ car this year is 100 kilos lighter than less last year’s and its team includes a female member. One of the world’s most innovative and challenging student competitions, SEM is held annually in Europe, America and Asia for high school and university students from around the world.

The energy efficiency competition is to be held from July 4 to 7 at the Sepang International Circuit in Kuala Lumpur.

The competition challenges participants to design and build energy efficient vehicles. Fuel-efficiency decides the winner. The most fuel efficient car ever designed for the event was capable of doing 4,896.1 kilometers (roughly the distance between Doha and Paris) on a litre of fuel.

QSTP Executive Chairman and Science & Technology Advisor Dr Tidu Maini stressed the two-fold relevance of the competition. “The sustainability of the event is one thing while the more important reason is that it is one of the challenges of the time. This enables us to face the reality of climate change and how to make things ecofriendly”, he said.

Qatar Shell Executive Vice- President Wael Sawan said he was “impressed by the level of detailed preparations and innovative thinking” demonstrated by the students in the design and assembly of the vehicles. “This competition will equip these future engineers with hands-on engineering and project management skills”, he added.

Shell partnered with QSTP in 2011 to enable university students in Qatar to participate in this event.

QSTP is provides financial support to the teams from Qatar.
