Emir sends condolences to Saudi king

QNA DOHA THE Emir His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani on Saturday sent a cable of condolences to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al Saud on the demise of Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince, Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz al Saud.

The Heir Apparent His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani also sent a cable of condolences to the Saudi king on the same occasion.

Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs HE Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor al Thani also sent a cable of condolences to the Saudi monarch on the death of the Crown Prince.

Earlier in the day, a statement from Saudi Arabia’s Royal Court said, “With deep sorrow and grief, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al Saud announced the death of his brother, Crown Prince, Deputy Premier and Minister of Interior Nayef bin Abdulaziz al Saud who passed away on Saturday.” The Saudi Press Agency quoted the statement as saying that “a funeral prayer will be performed at the Holy Mosque in Makkah after Maghreb (sunset) prayer on Sunday.

DPA adds: Nayef became an heir to the throne in October following the death of his brother Sultan. Born in 1934, Nayef studied at the Princes’ School in the Saudi capital of Riyadh. He was also tutored by senior religious scholars at home. He later studied diplomacy and security affairs.

He got his first government job at the age of 18, when he was appointed deputy governor of the Riyadh region. A year later, he became its governor.
