NEW DELHI UNDISCLOSED income of Rs 49,325 crore has been detected in India in the last three years while tax evasion of Rs 600 crore has been found on inputs from abroad under multi-pronged efforts to check blackmoney menace, government said on Friday.
The information has been contained in a 13-page factsheet released by the Finance Ministry in an apparent bid to blunt the campaign by Indian yoga guru Ramdev, who has attacked government on the issue during his three-day fast here.
Detailing the steps taken in the country and outside, the fact-sheet says the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has detected undisclosed income of over Rs 32,000 crore besides seizing assets valued at over Rs 2,600 crore.
This, it added, was in addition to detection of undisclosed income of Rs 17,325 crore in surveys conducted at business premises by the Income Tax Department (ITD).
Government is also pursuing 43,265 pieces of information regarding suspicious transactions received from overseas and domestic agencies.
More than 12,500 pieces of information regarding details of asset and payments received by Indian citizens in several countries have been obtained “which are now under different stages of processing and investigation”.
Further, 30,765 pieces of domestic information about suspicious transactions obtained by Financial Intelligence (FIU) too are being probed.
Government also disclosed that under Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA), investigation of information from German and France has led to detection of tax evasion of Rs.600 crore and realisation of Rs. 200 crore in taxes.
Meanwhile, yoga guru Ramdev on Friday asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to demostrate “political honesty and political will” in bringing back black money stashed away in foreign shores which can be spent on empowering the people.
He also claimed that terrorism and Naxalism in the country can be tackled if the government controls the flow of black money and the rising inflation. “The government has the list of people who have stashed away black money in foreign shores. We don’t want the names of those people, but at least disclose the amount at least. What is the harm in it? Why is the government reluctant?” he asked.
He said India can become the ‘super power’ in the world and the army can become more powerful than those in China and the US if the black money is brought back and spent on people and national security.
“We need an honest Prime Minister. I want the current Prime Minister to demonstrate his political honesty and political will on the issue of blackmoney,” he said, addressing the gathering at his three-day fast venue at Ramlila Ground here.
He also said that the government has to spell out its agenda on black money, corruption and Lokpal by tomorrow.
“Many people say I have no agenda. The agenda is to save the country. The people of the country will ask the government and all parties to spell out their agenda,” he said.
