A sculpture by Sudanese artist Mahgoub al Magboul impressed many visitors at the recently concluded Al Asmakh International Symposium of Sculpture. The marble sculpture, 1.5 metres long, was something to behold. Called 'Let them grow up', the artwork has been erected at Rasheeda Farm, a private farm located in the northern part of Qatar. The unique sculpture looks like a bold number '6'.
Magboul's sculpture was among creations displayed by 31 other sculptors from 17 countries. The event, which concluded last month, was the largest gathering dedicated to sculptors in the Middle East.
Magboul told Qatar Tribune that he has done a series under 'Let them grow up' title because whenever the public looked at some work of his, they would ask what it conveyed. According to him, while creating a piece, he always seeks to find a relationship between man and nature.
And what draws people's attention to his work is the simplicity of form and texture with the beautiful flow of lines, taking the audience from one point to another.
The artist, who is also a painter, believes it is necessary in life to learn to meditate on things.
This was not the first time that Magboul has participated in an exhibition. He has been part of many expositions in Qatar and also Sudan. Besides, Magboul has travelled widely to participate in international workshops, art symposia and exhibitions including in Haiti, Egypt, Morocco, USA, Romania and Germany.
Many of his works are collections by institutions and private individuals in several countries including Italy, France, Sweden, Holland, Germany, Nigeria and Sudan.
Talking about his inspiration, Magboul said he was brought up in a village in Sudan which was culturally rich. He grew up seeing people singing traditional songs, farming, and one could easily find different raw materials like stones.
His love for painting was also inspired in Sudan because when he was a child, he would go with his family to the mountains where residents dug chalk so that they could paint their houses. This was done when the festival of Eid was around the corner. His family also practiced farming.
Magboul advises aspiring artistes to follow their heart and pursue their hobbies rather passionately.
The artist, who came to Qatar in 1999, expressed gratefulness towards Qatar for giving artists a platform to showcase their talents and to grow professionally.
