VIRGINIA Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar (VCUarts Qatar) has appointed Dr Donald Baker to the position of Executive Dean.
Dr Baker, who received his PhD from the prestigious Stanford University, has extensive executive leadership experience in higher education, having served as a consultant to the president of Qatar University, and held full-time faculty appointments at universities including Stanford and Michigan State.
He has broad executive leadership experience in higher education, having served as dean of the College of Humanities and Sciences and vice-provost for undergraduate education at United Arab Emirates University.
Dr Baker has also served as principal of INTAAL, an international network of veteran consultants that serves as a resource to assist governments, governing boards and senior administrations in colleges and universities around the world.
In his more than four decades in higher education in Canada, Dr Baker has also been president of Mount Royal College (now University), vice-president academic of Wilfrid Laurier University and executive director for the Postsecondary Education Quality Assessment Board.
He has held full-time faculty appointments at Stanford University, Michigan State University, the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University.
He holds master's and doctoral degrees in history from Stanford and a bachelor's degree in history and international studies from the University of British Columbia.
He is currently completing a book on the development of the major national universities in Qatar and the UAE.
