As many as 7,335 companies were registered in Qatar after the Saudi-led bloc imposed the siege on June 5, 2017, according to a Qatar Chamber report released on Sunday.
Of these, 27 are foreign firms, the report said, reflecting Qatar's resilience to the unjust blockade. In all, 32 foreign firms chose to enter the Qatari market last year.
The report said 14,639 new companies were registered in the country in 2017, compared to 12,910 in 2016. This represents an increase of 13.4 percent, said Qatar Chamber (QC) Chairman Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim al Thani.
More than 34,848 companies renewed the commercial registration last year, the report said, adding that the total number of companies registered with the chamber reached 76,666 companies compared to 59,926 in 2016. This represents an increase of 28 percent.
In the past year, the Chamber organised about 200 different events, received 52 international trade delegations, conducted 14 overseas visits for Qatari businessmen to a number of countries and organised and participated in 14 trade fairs, Sheikh Khalifa said.
Since the first day of the siege, QC played a key role in combating its effects, he added.
The Chamber held meetings with authorities concerned and businessmen to ensure the flow of goods. QC has moved in all directions to confront the crisis and maintain the flow of goods and products, Sheikh Khalifa noted, adding:"The Chamber has made a number of achievements and carried out a large number of activities and events in 2017. It also launched important initiatives and participated in others to develop the services it provides to its members as part of its pivotal role in enhancing competitiveness in Qatar, and enabling the private sector to play a greater role in the overall development of the country."
