In an effort to introduce village sports and games among children, Enamakkal Kettungal Welfare Association (EKWA) organised the traditional sports of Kerala villages in Doha recently. The event was organised as part of their monthlong sports festival that will conclude on Qatar Sports Day on February 14.
The sports festival featured competitions like Goli, Kavidikali and Pambaram.
Goli is a game played with marbles.
The winner of the game gets all the marbles used in the game.
The game is fairly popular among rural children who play it in alleyways and courtyards.
Pambaram also attracted a large number of children. The game begins with all players holding a top wound. The players throw their tops at the same time — this is the ‘toss’ for the game.
The ‘toss’ is won by a person who spins and picks up the spinning top the quickest.
In Kavidikali — a board game — the Kavidis (seashells) are thrown together by a player to make a throw. The number of Kavidis that end up with flat face up will be the winner of the throw. The game progresses on board according to the points earned in throw.
These games are not common among expatriates and the urban population and they are losing popularity. However, they are still popular in rural India.
“Village sports and games are effective tools to go deep into the culture and tradition of a society as it is interlinked with life,” a participant said.
The EKWA office-bearers who coordinated the sports festival included RS Moideen, Faizal Koyakutty, Muneer, Aji Harid, Muhammed Rafi, Raziya Althaff and Sabeena Abdul Aziz.
