A large variety of Australian food products was on display on the occasion of Australia Day hosted by the Australian Embassy at Shangri-La Hotel Doha on Wednesday.
The imported Australian food items are part of the products being showcased at Australian Festival which was launched in Lulu hypermarkets recently and will continue until February 12.
According to Keith Smith, retail operations manager at Lulu Group International, they are expecting more Australian products to arrive in Doha soon.
Among the products on display during the event were different kinds of snacks, milk products, sauces and other condiments as well as some fresh produce.
In his remarks on the occasion, Australian Ambassador to Qatar HE Dr Axel Wabenhorst spoke about his country's expertise in growing food which could help in Qatar's bid to food security.
"I'm proud that many Australian products are available in Qatari supermarkets. Lamb and beef are perhaps Australia's best known export to Qatar. Australian fruit and vegetables are also available, as are manufactured products such as those you see at the Lulu Hypermarket display here tonight," the envoy said.
Ambassador Wabenhorst also urged the guests to consider Australia as their preferred destination as Qatar Airways add its fifth destination to the continent, Canberra.
He said,"With this expansion, I hope more of you will discover Australia as a holiday destination. Australia is safe, stable and welcoming. You will find unique indigenous culture, landscapes and wildlife, and outstanding shopping and restaurants. There is potential for more Qatari students to study in Australia. Australia has a high quality education system, and is the third most popular destination for foreign students in the world."
