Qatar will plant about 16,000 trees to beautify its 2022 FIFA World Cup stadiums and training sites.
This was announced by the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) during the Tree Nursery inauguration on Thursday.
The turf nursery was created on an 880,000 square metre site in the north of Doha with 5,000 replanted trees already flourishing at the tree nursery.
The nursery aims to plant 46 different species of trees as well as thousands of shrubs for 2022 World Cup scenery. The trees, a mixture of local and other varieties, were imported from China, Spain and Thailand, will be grown in a vast nursery outside Doha before being planted around the venues."It is one of the biggest nursery in the Middle East. Each year it will produce 1.2 million square metres of landscape grass. We have over 16, 000 trees from different countries (China, Thailand and Spain) with 46 varieties, enough to cover all the football stadiums for use in recreational areas as well as provide the pitches inside them," said Yasser Abdulla al Mulla, SC Landscape and Sport Turf Senior Manager.
"Our target was 16,000 trees. If we need more, we can plant more. We already have a lot of demand of trees for other purposes in the country and for us, it is a factory for plantation," Yasser said.
Al Bayt Stadium will be the first beneficiary of this beautification drive."The first stadium that will have this is Al Bayt stadium by the middle of the year and Al Wakrah Stadium will have this by the end of the year," he added.
SC Secretary-General Hassan al Thawadi said,"The inauguration of the SC Tree Nursery is another example of how Qatar is delivering on its promise to ensure that the 2022 FIFA World Cup leaves a lasting environmental legacy for the country. The project is also a great example of how Qatar is achieving self-sufficiency across various sectors and industries, as it will provide all the turf required for tournament stadiums and their surrounding precinct."
"In addition, the SC Tree Nursery promotes environmental sustainability by growing trees that have been recycled from different parts of the country. It is also introducing new types of trees to the ecological landscape of Qatar, thereby contributing to the biological diversity. As such, it supports the realisation of the Environmental Development pillar of the Qatar National Vision 2030," Thawadi added.
Minister of Municipality and Environment HE Mohammed bin Abdullah al Rumaihi said,"The green areas around the stadiums that we are going to build are a very important investment for the World Cup and for the future."
"We are ready to equip two of the stadiums this year with trees. I believe the size of this nursery is sufficient for what we need for the World Cup. This investment is only for the stadiums. We don't need to import because whatever we need is already here," he added.
