Caracas: At least 19 Venezuelan army officers have been arrested on charges of rebellion and treason, the digital newspaper Tal Cual reported Thursday. The detained officers were commanders or second-in command. The most prominent among them was lieutenant-colonel Igbert Jose Marin Chaparro, who headed an infantry battalion at the main military base in the capital Caracas. The detainees formed a group of dissidents within the army and will face a military court, according to the report. The army has denied suggestions by US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Venezuelan opposition politicians that President Nicolas Maduro could face a coup. (dpa)
