Residents of Northern Hemisphere, including Qatar residents, will have a good chance to observe Lyrids meteor shower from the evening of Sunday, April 22, 2018 till dawn of Monday, April 23, 2018, Qatar Calendar House (QCH) has announced.
According to Dr Beshir Marzouk, astronomy expert at QCH, the Lyrids meteor shower is usually active every year between April 16 and 25. Moreover, Lyrids meteor shower is one of the important meteors showers from earth, where the average shower will be 10 to 20 Lyrids meteors per hour and sometimes reaching 80 Lyrids meteors per hour.
Qatar residents and residents of countries of all Northern Hemisphere will not need astronomical instrumentations to see Lyrids meteor shower because they can see it with naked eye from places without light and environment pollutions (pure sky), and dark places.
Moreover, residents can take a nice photo for Lyrids meteor by using recent digital cameras with an increase exposure time while taking a photo to get best pictures, Dr Marzouk added.
Lyrids meteor shower is created by debris from 'Thatcher Comet', when earth passes through the dust and debris it leaves behind during April every year. The time to observe Lyrids meteor this year is very special because moon will not appear on sky, when the set time of moon will be after midnight approximately.
