A blast in Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province on Wednesday morning killed four rapid response police and one civilian, a local official said. ~
The commander of the Kandahar rapid response police force, General Janan Mama, was among those killed in the blast that took place in Kandahar city, said provincial council member Haji Mohammad Nadir. Nadir said five others were injured in the blast. The type of explosive used was not yet known, he added. Matiullah Hilal, a local police spokesman, however said only the commander was killed and three policemen were wounded while no civilians were hurt.~~
Hilal said a magnetic bomb attached to the commander's vehicle exploded, killing him and wounding the other policemen.~ No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.~
Magnetic bombs are frequently used in Afghanistan to target government workers travelling in unarmored vehicles.
