Qatar's industrial production index (IPI) for February 2018 reached 103.9 points, a decrease by 2.5 percent compared to the previous month (January 2018), while increased by 2 percent, compared to the corresponding month of 2017, data released by the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics (MDPS) shows.
The IPI consists of four main components including mining with a relative weightage of 83.6 percent, manufacturing (15.2 percent), electricity (0.7 percent), and water (0.5 percent).
Mining
The mining index decreased by 1.9 percent in February 2018 compared to the previous month (January of 2018). The drop in index was mainly due to the decrease in the production of crude oil and natural gas by 1.9 percent, and 'other mining and quarrying' by 3 percent.
When compared to the corresponding month of the previous year (February 2017), the IPI of mining increased by 1.4 percent.
Manufacturing
A decrease of 5.3 percent was recorded in the manufacturing sector in February 2018 compared to the previous month. The fall was due to the decrease in production of seven groups: manufacture of basic metals by 7.8 percent, manufacture of chemicals and chemical products (6.7 percent), manufacture of cement and other non-metallic mineral products (6.6 percent), printing and reproduction of recorded media (4.4 percent), manufacture of rubber and plastics products (2.5 percent), manufacture of beverages (1.8 percent) and manufacture of food products (1 percent) .
However an increase was recorded in manufacture of refined petroleum products by 1.2 percent.
On the other hand, in terms of annual change, comparing to February 2017, an increase of 5.7 percent was recorded by the manufacturing sector.
The increase was recorded in the following groups: manufacture of food products by 27.2 percent, manufacture of rubber and plastics products (16.2 percent), manufacture of refined petroleum products (10.1 percent), manufacture of chemicals and chemical products (6.6 percent), manufacture of beverages (5.1 percent), printing and reproduction of recorded media (3.6 percent).
Meanwhile, a decline was recorded in manufacture of basic metals (4.8 percent) and manufacture of cement and other non-metallic mineral products (0.3 percent).
Electricity
A decrease of 11.4 percent was observed in the production of electricity in February 2018 compared to previous month, while on annual basis an increase of 5.5 percent was recorded.
Water
The consumption of water noticed a 7.8 percent fall in February 2018 compared to the previous month, while a decrease of 3.8 percent was recorded on annual basis.
