With the fasting month of Ramadan just around the corner, the Ministry of Economy and Commerce has slashed the prices of more than 500 consumer goods, including milk, meat and honey.
The revised pricing will come into effect from Sunday morning and will continue until the end of the holy month.
The discounted consumer goods initiative is the latest in a series of welfare programmes rolled out by the ministry under the slogan"#lessthanduty" to mark the holy month of Ramadan. It has already increased the monthly ration of sugar and milk for citizens as part of the programme.
The ministry has stressed that the supply of subsidised food is a right of the citizens that must not be denied regardless of the reasons.
The initiative, like in the previous years, is aimed at easing the burden on the citizens and residents as they undertake an arduous spiritual pursuit in the holy month.
The list of discounted consumer goods includes most commodities used by the people in Qatar during Ramadan, such as flour, sugar, rice, pasta, oil and other non-edible items of importance in the month. The complete list, which has been circulated to all major consumer groups in the country, can be accessed from the ministry's website and its social networking handles.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the ministry reiterated its firm stance against violations of the consumer protection law and its executive regulations. It said it will intensify inspection campaigns to check malpractices.
Stressing the need for community participation in reporting consumer rights violations, the ministry said it will take swift and stern action against those who violate the consumer protection laws.
