The first Qatar Equine Foot Conference, organised by the Equine Veterinary Medical Centre (EVMC) and Al Shaqab - specifically dedicated to the education of the horse foot and lower leg - saw some 90 horse owners, farriers and veterinarians from major equine organisations and stud farms in Qatar coming together at QNCC and Al Shaqab from May 3 to 5.
Internationally renowned experts in the field of equine limb anatomy, biomechanics, locomotion and lameness from Great Britain, Italy and Germany, were specially flown in by the EVMC, to conduct lectures and practical sessions for participants.
Focusing on the form and function of the foot, the conference was meant to help owners and trainers make management decisions on the care of their horses' hooves.
Farriers and veterinarians learnt about evidence-based strategies to successfully manage a variety of hoof problems in foals, horses in training and breeding horses. Common foot ailments involving limb imbalance, foal podiatry, laminitis and correct horseshoeing methodology were also expounded.
In addition to lectures and demonstrations, foreign companies set up exhibition booths to market their equine products during the conference.
Dr Mats H. Troedsson, Director EVMC, said,"This is the first of many educational seminars and short courses that the EVMC is planning to organise. I was very pleased with the turnout and support of the local equine community towards the conference. It provides us with the motivation to conduct the conference on an annual basis."
