THE Ramadan Sports Festival (RSF) 2018, organised by Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF), starts on May 21, at 9:30pm, kicking off 12 nights of thrilling activities. The men's volleyball and football competitions mark the start of the first day of the festival.
The RSF men's volleyball competition takes place in Aspire Dome's indoor volleyball hall. Running for five days, this competition features 12 teams competing in four groups, with the winner eventually being decided on May 25.
The eight-day football tournament will take place on Aspire Zone's outdoor warm-up track, and will see four groups of 12 teams compete during the group stage, with the winners advancing to the finals on May 28.
Other activities due to take place in the Aspire Dome, the world's largest indoor multi-purpose dome, include a one-day table tennis competition for people with special needs, organised in collaboration with the Qatar Paralympic Committee on May 23. Also taking place in the Dome is the Aspire Futsal Tournament for employees and a two-day men's indoor hockey tournament which starts on May 24.
Next week will also see the start of the five-day women's volleyball tournament, due to take place on May 26, followed by the six-day men's basketball tournament starting on May 27, and the four-day cricket tournament which takes place on May 29. The women's gym has also allocated fitness classes to give young women between the ages of 9 and 14 - an enjoyable and active experience during Ramadan.
Moreover, Aspetar, the orthopaedic and sports medicine hospital and member of AZF, has launched a new 'Healthy Ramadan' campaign to increase awareness of the importance of adopting an active and healthy lifestyle during the Holy Month.
To further promote physical activity among community members, professionals and recreational athletes alike, Aspetar will share short health awareness videos through its social media channels, and will ask viewers a series of questions that they can answer via the Facebook and Instagram story feature to encourage people to engage with and follow such healthy lifestyle advice.
Aspetar will organise a sports competition for AZF employees as part of its 'Step into Health' programme during Ramadan. This competition will celebrate participants who walk the furthest distances each week and use a smartphone app to calculate the number of steps taken.
