COPENHAGEN Leading members of the Danish Liberal Party distanced themselves on Tuesday from comments by a cabinet member that Muslims who fast during the holy month of Ramadan should take holiday rather than go to work.
Inger Stojberg, Denmark's minister for immigration and integration, made the comments in an op-ed article in Monday's edition of the tabloid BT.
Stojberg wrote that she"respected those who wish to practice their religion"but in her view religion was"a private matter."She noted that bus drivers or factory workers, for instance, could"pose a risk to others"if they abstain from drinking and eating for up to 18 hours.
However, Karen Ellemann, leader of the parliamentary caucus of Stojberg's Liberal Party, told Danish broadcaster TV2 that Stojberg's views were not backed by the bloc. (DPA)
