NEPAL'S Ambassador to Qatar HE Ramesh Prasad Koirala has praised the Qatari government for taking various steps to ensure that rights of migrant workers are protected in the country.
Koirala, who met with Minister of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs HE Issa Saad al Jafali al Nuaimi to discuss issues related to Nepali workers in Qatar recently, said the minister was very willing to support the cause of workers' welfare in the country.
"I took the opportunity to congratulate the minister for opening ILO office in Qatar. It is a major step towards placing Qatar as one of the best countries for migrant workers in the region," he said.
Koirala said the minister assured of taking further steps, including raising the minimum wage from the current QR750 to a higher limit among others, to ensure that migrant workers are well-paid in the country."The announcement in this connection could be made by the end of this year," he said.
The envoy said that Nepal is willing to send more semi-skilled workers to Qatar.
"We see Qatar as an ideal destination for migrant workers. The country has put several mechanisms in place to ensure that migrant workers are treated well. We want more Nepalese to take up jobs in Qatar," the envoy said.
"Today, Qatar is one of the most attractive places for the Nepalese workers. As per our record, there are around 410,000 Nepalese people in Qatar, constituting the second largest community in the country," he said.
Though most of the Nepalese workers are in menial jobs, he said, their dedication to work, loyalty, sincerity and integrity have earned trust and goodwill of the people and government of Qatar.
"No doubt, they are playing a great role in further strengthening relations between two countries," he said.
The envoy also revealed that a high-level ministerial delegation from Nepal is expected to visit Doha soon to further strengthen the country's relationship with Qatar.
