Qatar has welcomed the meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean President Kim Jong-un in Singapore on Tuesday. In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalled the meeting that took place between the leaders of the two Koreas in April and hailed Trump-Kim meeting a historical precedent promising further easing of tensions on the Korean Peninsula leading to a binding agreement under which the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula would be achieved.
The statement said achieving a comprehensive solution through dialogue and peaceful means will end decades-long conflict between the people of the two Koreas.
"It will spread security and tranquility among North Korea's neighbours," the statement said. It pointed out that the comprehensive solution will be a quantum leap and a new achievement in efforts to curb the spread of nuclear weapons around the world, and perhaps that step is significant for the Middle East, which Qatar fears to become a nuclear racing arena unless the situation of escalation is contained by activating peaceful means to resolve disputes and to reduce the nuclear ambitions of all parties.
The statement expressed the satisfaction of Qatar for the success of the meeting and expressed its wish that this would be followed by practical steps to achieve sustainable peace on the Korean Peninsula.
