Almost 90 percent of the mega strategic water reservoirs project work has been completed, a top Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) official has said.
"About 90 percent of work on Al Thumama project has been accomplished. At other locations, the project has been 85-90 percent complete. All the construction work has been finished, only the finishing touches remain to be given," Engineer Ahmed Nasser Mubarak al Nasr, Director of Technical Affairs at Kahramaa, said during the a visit paid by Speaker of the Advisory Council HE Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid al Mahmoud to the project in Al Thumama on Tuesday.
Mahmoud along with other dignitaries and officials visited the mega strategic water reservoirs in A Thumama area and checked on the work and the latest facilities used in one of the world's largest man-made water reservoirs in the world.
The reservoirs project is vital for Qatar's water security as it will help in providing long-term safe water in emergency situations by linking the country's main areas and production sites in the South and North and ensuring sustained water flow.
Nasr noted that the project worth QR14.5 billion is being implemented in five areas in the country ” Umm Salal, Al Thumama, Rawdat Rashid, Abu Nakhla and Umm Baraka.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.
Nasr reviewed the great efforts exerted by Kahramaa to implement this project within the framework of the state's plans to augment strategic water reserves.
"The total capacity of the project is currently 960 million gallons of water which with the completion of the phase 1 will tip 2300 million gallons with 650km of water pipes used," Naser added.
Expressing his satisfaction and pride over the project progress, Mahmoud said this gives hope and confidence about future of Qatar.
He said pursuing such a project amid adverse circumstances following the imposition of an unjust blockade on Qatar proves that the country can pass through any crisis firmly.
