THE National Committee for International Humanitarian Law of the Ministry of Justice signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the regional mission for the GCC states based in Kuwait on Wednesday, to enhance cooperation between the two sides and exchange experiences in international humanitarian law.
Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice and President of the National Committee for International Humanitarian Law HE Sultan bin Abdullah al Suwaidi said in a statement to Qatar News Agency that the MoU comes within the framework of maintaining close relations and fruitful cooperation and exchange of experiences with regional and international committees concerned with the international humanitarian law.
Suwaidi noted that the MoU reflects the keenness of Qatar on the optimal application of international humanitarian law by raising awareness of this important law, training and raising the capacities of all target groups, including civil and military educational institutions, proposing new legislative texts or introducing amendments to existing laws, in order to harmonise with international humanitarian law conventions and to provide guidance for the interpretation of humanitarian norms in order to better protect victims of armed conflict.
He added that the National Committee for International Humanitarian Law, in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), will start a programme to prepare Qatari lecturers this year for the implementation of the provisions of the MoU.
He further pointed out that on the sidelines of the signing ceremony of the memorandum of understanding signed in Kuwait, a meeting was held between the delegation of Qatar and representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross to discuss developments in international humanitarian law at the regional and international levels.
