AS France beat Croatia to lift FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 trophy, members of French community in Qatar were on Sunday in complete euphoria for being the world football champions again.
"We are extremely happy our team did very well to be the world champions today. And they will be coming next to Qatar in 2022," Ambassador of France to Qatar HE Eric Chevallier told the local media following the sweet victory of France over Croatia in an exciting FIFA World Cup 2018 grand finale on Sunday.
The Ambassador joined hundreds of French nationals, including other Embassy officials, diplomats and football enthusiasts at a special screening of the match hosted by the French Embassy Doha at the Al Wosail Ballroom of the Ritz Carlton Doha.
A replica of the World Cup trophy was symbolically lifted by the French official as the room erupted with sheer joy and excitement at the end of the game.
For Mia, one of the members of the community, it was one of the proudest days for her nation.
"France won its first world cup title in 1998. Today, our team made another history. We are happy to witness the game and our community looks forward to welcoming our national team to Qatar in 2022," she said.
As early as 5pm, fans trooped to the venue proudly wearing their country's colours and flags. Some had the French flag painted on their beaming faces in a show of support to the game viewed in different venues across Qatar.
Deafening chants and applause filled the venue even more in the final minutes of the game with France leading by two goals against its worthy opponent.
Another spectator, Jo, expressed his gratitude to the Embassy for gathering the nationals in one venue to celebrate the important milestone.
"There is nothing like celebrating this historic day with your fellow countrymen and those who truly support our team. I would also like to congratulate Croatia's team for reaching the finals and for the good game they played. I hope this same excitement will be witnessed by many when it's Qatar's turn to host the World Cup," he said.
The community continued the celebrations over some food made available during the event.
