Qatar's Industrial Production Index (IPI) for May stood at 108.5 points, registering a month-on-month increase of 3.3 percent and a year-on-year jump of 4.7 percent.
IPI is a short-term quantitative index that measures the changes in the volume of productions of a selected basket of industrial products over a given period with respect to that in a chosen period called the base period.
The Industrial Production Index consists of three main components ” mining with a relative importance of 83.6 percent, manufacturing with 15.2 percent; electricity with 0.7 percent, and water with 0.5 percent.
The index of the mining sector, according to a Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics (MDPS) report, showed an increase of 3.6 percent in May compared with April. The surge is primarily driven by increase in the production quantities of crude oil and natural gas by 3.6 percent.During the same period the mining index showed a decrease in the 'other mining and quarrying' category by 0.2 percent.
When compared with the index value of the corresponding month of the previous year, the IPI of mining increased by 6.3 percent.
The manufacturing index in May showed an increase of 1.7 percent month-on-month due to increase in the production of four groups ” chemicals and chemical products by 3.0 percent; basic metals by 2.8 percent, beverages by 1.6 percent and food products by 1.2 percent.
However, a decrease was recorded in the production of four other groups ” cement and other non-metallic mineral products by 5.5 percent; printing and reproduction of recorded media by 2.5 percent; manufacture of rubber and plastics products by 1.8 percent and manufacture of refined petroleum products by 0.8 percent.
In terms of annual change, the manufacturing index saw a decrease of 0.4 percent. It was mainly driven by a decline in the production of printing and reproduction of recorded media by 17.5 percent, cement and other non-metallic mineral products by 6.2 percent and chemicals and chemical products by 2.6 percent.
However the manufacturing index rose 18.5 percent year-on-year in May due to increase in the production of rubber and plastics products by 18.5 percent, refined petroleum products by 8.1 percent, basic metals by 5 percent, beverages by 3.9 percent and food products by 3.5 percent. In May, the index for electrcity showed an increase of 22.6 percent between May and April this year. On an year-on-year basis, the index declined 23.1 percent.
