PAKISTAN'S former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday challenged~his 10-year jail term on corruption charges but his party said they do not expect any relief.
"The conviction and sentence are based on no evidence,"Sharif's lawyer Khawaja Haris Ahmad said in an appeal filed at the Islamabad High Court.
The court is likely to start hearing the appeal from Tuesday, said Saad Hashmi, a member of Sharif's legal team. The team will also ask the court to release Sharif on bail until a ruling on the appeal is announced, he added.
Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Muhammad Safdar have separately challenged the court's decision. The court ruled on July 6 that the family bought properties in London with funds from Pakistan in the 1990s during one of Sharif's three terms in power.
"We don't expect justice from the courts,"said Senator Mushahidullah Khan, spokesman for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
Sharif was handed 10 years of jail and a fine of 8 million pounds ($10.5 million), his daughter was handed an 8-year jail term and 2-million-pound fine, and his son-in-law was sentenced to one year in prison.
In jail, Sharif has been provided 'B' class facilities that include a mattress, table, chair, fan, TV and newspapers.
However, his daughter has refused to avail herself of this better category of facilities.
