The"best ever" 2018 FIFA World Cup was more than showcasing football as it afforded Russians the opportunity to change the perception of the people with regards to their country. After the final whistle of the final, thousands of Russians celebrated France's second World Cup win with fans from all over the world at the Red Square as if the victory was their own.
It was actually theirs in some ways as a cross-section of fans from different nations made them join in the celebrations. FIFA President Gianni Infantino also agreed that Russians have indeed passed the test in not only staging a great World Cup but also proving to the world that they are a welcoming nation."I think that everyone ... has discovered actually a beautiful country, a welcoming country, a country full of beautiful people keen to show the world that what maybe sometimes is said doesn't happen here," Infantino had said.
"I think that a lot of pre-conceived opinions have changed with and thanks to this World Cup. Everyone has seen the true nature of all the people."
Providing a picture of how the Russians have surprised all, Djamila from Angola said,"The Russian people have stunned me with their humanity. Before I came I had expected racial treatment but to my surprise, the people have actually been so nice. Showing us directions, asking to take photos and always wishing good luck."
Jake Bohan from England too had words of praise for Russia."The World Cup was amazing and the people unbelievable. Lots of English fans did not come to Russia until the semi-final game and the support we got from the Russians was welcoming despite the defeat.
"I was skeptical of coming but was convinced after seven of my friends agreed to travel. It's been an adventure, Russian people are very nice and friendly. They greet you, ask if you need anything they can assist with. Overall, I am so impressed with the reception we have received in the last five days," said Thai woman Achara.
A visitor from Italy said,"I will visit the country and spend more time again, the people are friendly and supportive."
Brazilian Umberto quipped,"Beautiful people and welcoming, I had no problems even when communication was a challenge."
A Croatian fan said"look at the joy and excitement in their faces. It is remarkable. The atmosphere since I arrived was warm and pleasant."
Knowing the skepticism and how Russians are viewed from outside. Many of them went out of their way to help visitors in an effort to soften the belief how they're perceived.
Younger Russians want many visitors to see their country as a favourable destination.
"We know stereotyping has limited the amount of visitors who make this vast country a destination but I believe this World Cup is an eye opener for all to see we Russians welcome visitors," Anderson said.
"I am proud of my country because everyone here is happy. I have met and made new friends and this memory will stay with me for the rest of my life," a Russian teenager said.
