THE South and Rayyan Security departments have busted a gang involved in theft of copper and aluminum cables from some project sites and unguarded, under construction houses.
According to a Ministry of Interior (MoI) press release on Sunday, the departments formed a joint team to investigate the incidents of cable thefts after receiving reports in this regard from different parts of the country.
The team searched places that deal with stolen items for a clue to nab the thieves. After intensive search and investigation, a number of accused were caught red-handed while stealing the cables. During interrogation, one of the members of the gang confessed and guided the investigation team to one of the garages in the industrial zone where they sold the stolen items.
After obtaining the necessary permits from the Public Prosecution, 25 persons of different nationalities were arrested while carrying out the sale and purchase without the permission of the competent authorities in the State.
Subsequently, the accused were referred to the specialised judicial bodies for legal action against them while large quantities of copper cables, aluminum wire, iron and scrap, in addition to cars used for transporting the stolen cables were recovered from their possession.
Meanwhile, the concerned authorities have urged owners of under construction buildings to secure their sites properly.
