THE 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar will be a benchmark for future events from the legacy perspective, the Secretary-General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) Hassan al Thawadi has said.
Speaking at a panel discussion during the recently concluded Qatar-Germany Business and Investment Forum in Berlin, Thawadi said Qatar has taken a lot of inspiration from 2006 FIFA World Cup that was held in Germany.
"Germany 2006 was particularly inspirational for us because the legacy of that tournament is still being felt today. We adopted the same approach with our preparations as planning for legacy begins the moment you win the right to host the tournament. From demountable stadiums to promoting healthy living, I'm confident the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be a benchmark for future events," Thawadi said.
Highlighting the positives to be offered by Qatar during the upcoming edition of the FIFA World Cup, Thawadi said,"Qatar's compact hosting concept will make 2022 FIFA World Cup the most unique in the history of the game. The concept will provide players with more time for rest and recovery between games while enabling fans to enjoy the tournament from one accommodation location."
Praising the vital role being played by Germany in preparation for the mega sporting event, he said,"Over 30 German companies have played vital roles in Qatar's preparation for the World Cup to-date. The German companies have been involved in the development of major tournament infrastructure, including five of the eight stadiums planned for the tournament."
Besides these companies directly involved in 2022 FIFA World Cup preparations, it was also highlighted during the discussion that well over 100 German companies are operating in Qatar today on projects worth around QR309 billion.
The panel titled, 'Tourism, Health and Sports: The Road to World Cup 2022' also saw participation of other key dignitaries.
