Kenyan forces killed 10 al-Shabaab militants Monday, the military said in a statement, as it continues its fight against the Islamist group from neighbouring Somalia.
The Kenya Defence Force ambushed the militants in Pandanguo in Lamu County near the border with Somalia early in the morning, according to the statement.
"Following the incident, 10 al-Shabaab militants were killed,"the statement read, adding that three soldiers had also been injured.
It is the first major offensive the Kenyan army has carried out against the militants since two attacks by the group claimed the lives of 10 soldiers in Lamu in August.
Kenya's problems with the al-Qaeda affiliated group began after Kenyan forces went to Somalia as part of the African Union Mission the neighbouring country.
The militants have since carried out deadly attacks in a bid to pressure Kenyan forces to withdraw from Somalia.
