With an exponential jump in Indian exports to Qatar over the past one year, time is ripe for a 'Made in India' exhibition in Doha, India's Ambassador to Qatar HE P Kumaran has said.
In the last year alone, Indian exports to Qatar jumped 87 percent to $1.5 billion, the ambassador said, highlighting the Indian opportunities for growth in the Qatari market and the role the exhibition can play in tapping them.
"It's a phenomenal increase. We don't see this kind of growth in one year. Basically, it shows the kind of opportunities available for Indian businessmen in Qatar," Kumaran said.
While the ambassador attributed a part of the import surge to a siege-induced trade diversion from the United Arab Emirates, he said there was a lot of room for Indian businesses to grow in Qatar.
"We should be able to host the Made in India Exhibition sometime next year," the envoy said while addressing a 49-member Indian business delegation at a networking event in Doha on Monday.
Next year would be apt, he said, as 2019 is to be celebrated as the India-Qatar Year of Culture.
KM Varghese, the president of the Doha-based Indian Business and Professionals Council (IBPC), which organised the networking event in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), said up to 400 companies are expected to participate in the expo.
"It will be like the Indian pavilion at the ongoing The Big 5 Qatar exhibition, but at a much bigger scale and comprising companies from a diverse range of sectors," Varghese added.
The Qatar edition of the Big 5 exhibition for the built-environment industry began in Doha on Monday and features more than 240 companies from 21 countries. It will conclude on Wednesday.
The Indian pavilion at the expo is biggest with 49 exhibitors, the representatives of whom mostly participated in Monday's IBPC-CII networking event.
CII's International Department Director for Gulf and MENA Haridas Pantheeradi said the Big 5 Qatar is getting a tremendous response from consumers in Qatar and could give a significant push to the bilateral trade between India and Qatar.
Ever since some of Qatar's neighbours imposed an unjust siege, the bilateral trade between India and Qatar has been on the rise. Indian imports from Qatar a year grew to around $10.5 billion, of which natural gas and other crude oil products account for nearly $9 billion.
