GENERATION Amazing Qatar's innovative football for development programme has benefitted more than 250,000 people since its launch during the country's successful bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup'99.
The programme is currently operational in Nepal, Pakistan, Jordan, Lebanon, the Philippines and India, and is set to expand to more countries over the next four years. It has boosted 26 underprivileged communities, including refugee camps, by building football pitches and implementing bespoke social programmes.
In addition, since 2016, Generation Amazing has been supporting workers and schoolchildren in Qatar through inspirational and educational training sessions. To-date, more than 180 coaches have been trained to deliver Generation Amazing programmes in the country.
Secretary General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) Hassan al Thawadi praised the programme during a recent speech in New York.
"Generation Amazing utilises the power of football to help underprivileged people develop their leadership, communication and organisational skills. It has been a great success. Our goal is to reach a million people by 2022; so far we have benefitted 250,000 people."
Al Thawadi expects Generation Amazing to continue growing over the next four years."The great thing is we are seeing the results develop organically," added al Thawadi."During the recent flooding in Kerala, for example, two Generation Amazing ambassadors, who are workers in Qatar and became part of the programme, utilised the skills they had learnt to help with the crisis their community faced."
In addition to building football pitches and implementing social programmes, Generation Amazing has selected participants to attend successive FIFA World Cup'99 tournaments in South Africa, Brazil and Russia. During the trips, participants have attended matches, along with social development workshops, such as leadership courses.
Legendary midfielder Xavi Hernandez a FIFA World Cup'99 winner with Spain in 2010 was announced as a Generation Amazing ambassador two years ago. He said it was an honour to be involved with the programme.
"Generation Amazing really inspires me through the fantastic work they are doing with different groups within society. Joining the Generation Amazing programme, and helping children, migrant workers, refugees and the people who need it most, is a real privilege for me."
