Although colour blindness is a challenge that faces many people, Hamad al Mataowa managed to beat that and he became an artists specialised in blending colours.
Mataowa decided to raise awareness on colour blindness among the society and get people to feel how is it like to be colour blind with his art exhibition that features paintings in the way people with colour blindness see.
The paintings were put on display at the Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) on Thursday showcasing famous cartoon characters painted with different colours to give people an idea of how colour blind people can see them.
"Whoever comes to my exhibition becomes color blind. I have selected famous cartoon characters that people are familiar with but selected the colours as a colour blind person can see them," he said.
Mataowa is a painter and an art trainer. He knows all colours and memorises them by numbers.
He said nobody can figure out he is colour blind unless he tells them.
"My students get surprised knowing that I am colour blind, especially that I instruct them with the best colour blends and instruct them in that", he added.
Mataowa said his struggle during his childhood as a colour blind person motivated him to memorise and learn about colours using their numbers and names.
"People didn't know much about this challenge and mocked me for being unable to match the right colours which made me afraid of colours during my childhood. I decided to go further than learning colours and became an artist producing several artworks because my experience made me want to help others who suffer the same, especially in Qatar as there is a lack of awareness about that issue," Mataowa said passionately.
The art exhibition displays paintings of well-known characters such as Tom and Jerry, Snowwhite and many other popular cartoon characters.
