The 8th edition of Doha Traditional Dhow Festival will focus on display of dhows manufactured with traditional model and technology.
Speaking to Qatar Tribune at an event, Director Katara Beach Management and Head of Dhow Festival Organising Committee Ahmad al Hitmi said,"We are looking for ingenious models of traditional dhows made with ancient engineering used in marine history. There are 14 different models of dhows with different names in marine history. So, the number of ancient models will be the focus of this festival rather than the number of participating dhows."
A committee, including Qatar Museums, the Cultural Village Foundation (Katara) and Private Engineers Forum, will select the models to be exhibited at the festival.
"A firework display, accompanied by light and sound show and laser light, will be held at 8pm on Thursday, November 22 and Friday, November 23. The festival committee will make a special announcement on Friday after the show which will highlight 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar," Hitmi said.
A total of 60 dhows of different sizes from Qatar, Oman, Turkey, Kuwait, Greece, Iran, India, Italy and Zanzibar will be showcased in the festival.
The five-day event will also feature demonstration of making fishing nets, handicrafts, toy dhows and marine competitions that highlight the marine tradition.
"Over 100,000 people visited the festival last year. Pleasant weather will encourage more people to visit this year," Hitmi said.
