Sraab shocks rich field for Ras Laffan Cup

The Blue Eye, the Amir's Trophy (Gr 1) winner, had to put in his best to eke out his victory in the Barzan Cup, the feature race of the eighth Race Meeting on Thursday.
Besides the Ras Laffan Cup, four races were held as the Umm Salal Oak Trials at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club turf in New Al Rayyan.
The Khalifa bin Sheail al Kuwari-owned six-year-old bay horse was ridden by British jockey Harry Bentley and he managed to edge Black Granite by nose to emerge the champion in the 1,600m dash. Both were trained by Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi.
The third place went to Pazeer by neck, while Vitally Important and Courtofversailles finished in the fourth and fifth spots. This was season's first run for The Blue Eye, who took his victory tally to 16 in 26 starts.
Sraab stunned a star-studded field to capture the Ras Laffan Cup over 2,000m. The experienced nine-year-old gray mare, with Ray Fuentes astride, got into a perfect place and got the better of Al Lusail (Faleh Bughanaim) by half a length. Footprintinthesand grabbed the third place beating Moaddie by half a length.
The Engineer Hassan Ali Alabdulmalik-owned Sraab posted 15th victory in 53 races and this would be quite memorable for the 88-rated horse as six runners were rated above 100.
Alban de Miuelle and Umm Qarn's horses performed well to clinch two of the Umm Salal Oak Trials races. Jalzalah, ridden by Matheiu Pelletan, and Deebah, with Ronan Thomas in the saddle, emerged the winners in their respective races. For the four-year-old gray filly Jalzalah, it was her first win in four races, while Deebah, also a four-year-old gray filly, extended her impressive run, posting second win in as many starts this season.
JP Guillambert guided Rodeyna to victory in the Umm Salal Oak Trials 1,600m run, beating Insijam and Northern Beam, ridden by Stephan Ladjadj, got past Mzoon to clinch the 1,850m race.
