Doha: Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger while speaking on beIN Sports opined that Qatar World Cup 2022 will be a success, but that the national team must do its own part with a
good show.
“Seeing it closely what they do, I think that they have a fantastic organisation. I have no doubt on that, but part of the success of this World Cup will be how well their national team does.
“They have done great work, and I would say at the moment in two years we can give a better answer to the chances that they will have. We have not seen Qatar really, two years before the competition you can have a better idea of how they will be. Their luck is that they have four years to prepare as they have a good young team and every month will
be important for them.”
Qatar are currently ranked 96th in the world and the Felix Sanchez’s men have shown positives following their eye-catching 1-0 victory over Switzerland and a 2-2 draw against Iceland, with the matches taking place in Lugano (Switzerland) and Eupen (Belgium).
Sanchez, a former a youth coach at Barcelona before
becoming Qatar’s ninth coach, has improved the fortunes of the team since joining from the Olympic team in 2017.
Sanchez is experienced with the players having progressed with some of the players as a coach from the Olympic team.
Qatar has also beaten Iraq, China, Palestine and Ecuador this year, but still opposition is expected next year at both the 2019 Asian Cup and the Copa America, where the country is competing as a guest nation and could end up facing Brazil and Argentina. (TNN)
