Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al Thani inaugurated the Qatar School of Science and Technology for Boys in Umm Al Seneem area on Thursday.
During the opening ceremony, a documentary film about the school and stages of its establishment was screened. The film highlighted the goals and objectives of the school.
The PM toured the school and was briefed on the school›s various educational and training programmes in science and technology. He listened to detailed explanation about the role of the school in providing high-quality education based on integration of scientific subjects.
The PM affirmed that Qatar, under the leadership of the Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani, attaches great importance to the educational system.
He praised the idea of establishing Qatar School of Science and Technology and its mission and vision, which will be providing students with innovative and stimulating educational experiences in the fields of science and technology, especially in research, development and problem solving. It will prepare the students to contribute effectively to the knowledge-based economy.
The Prime Minister said this would help in achieving the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030 and provide the country with qualified educational outputs and students capable of continuing university studies or joining the labour market.
Qatar School of Science and Technology is a specialised secondary school from grades from 9 to 12. It aims to adopt an integrated educational approach based on the teaching of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in an integrated manner. The STEM Education focuses on the study of the four subjects and its methodology is designed for imparting the education without the need to teach the subjects separately.
The teaching at the school started for the first time at the beginning of the current academic year 2018-19, with the enrolment of 60 Qatari students in grade 9.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister of Education and Higher Education HE Dr Mohammed bin Abdul Wahid al Hammadi said the opening of Qatar School of Science and Technology for Boys is a qualitative step towards comprehensive Qatar›s development by building great minds of the Qatari youth and achieving the vision of the ministry that aims to provide sustainable, innovative and high-quality learning opportunities to the Qatari community.
He said there is no doubt that the ministry’s quest for a knowledge-based economy requires to build quality educational institutions, igniting students’ minds, developing innovations, adopting their ideas and preparing them to the highest levels of quality and production.
He expressed his deep gratitude to the Prime Minister for his support to the school and for following up on its implementation in all its phases till its inauguration.
The school carries the aspirations of outstanding Qatari students seeking scientific excellence and who are serious in achieving their academic ambitions, he added.
The minister said it is different from other schools as it targets talented Qatari students in the field of science who show a passion for technology, engineering and mathematics, to prepare them for quality education and to continue to adopt excellence for four years of hard work.
Hammadi said the school provides a unique educational experience for Qatari students through its laboratories which contribute to constructing a strong scientific and research base in the secondary stage, which continues during university, to produce a new Qatari generation that is able to compete globally with their research and projects.
This is the right investment to build future generations armed with the skills of the 21st century, especially in the fields of science on which the economies of developed countries in our modern world rely on, he said.
Hammadi told the first batch of students that Qatar has great hopes in them to achieve its status in the future, urging them to set an example for their colleagues and continue their work and ambition towards achieving the leadership that the country hopes for them, to become diligent leaders and to set a model in education and work.
The school aims to provide a high level of education based on the integration of scientific materials, and in line with the development of the education sector in developed countries, to graduate students with scientific basis that guarantees them to join the top universities in the world.
It also aims to build a generation of scientists, researchers and inventors to provide the Qatari labour market with rare scientific disciplines and educational outputs that possess the skills for a knowledge-based economy, thus benefiting the objectives of the Qatar National Vision 2030.
Qatar has placed science, technology and innovation at the top of its national priorities and included them in its strategic plans and national vision goals, as well as adopting a five-pillar national research strategy that includes research, development, energy, environment, information technology and computing.
