THE Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani has stressed the importance of achieving a just, comprehensive and lasting solution to the long-standing Palestinian problem in a speech delivered at the United Nations.
This should be achieved through negotiations and on the basis of ending the Israeli occupation of the Arab territories within a specific timeframe, HH the Amir said.
“Adherence to legitimate international resolutions and a globally-recognised two-state solution is equally important along with establishment of a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital within the pre-1967 borders”, he said in the speech.
The speech was delivered on behalf of the Amir by Acting Charge d’Affaires at Qatar’s Embassy in Vienna Abdullah bin Nasser al Fahid, at a ceremony in the United Nations. It coincided with the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which falls on November 29 every year.
The Amir stressed that Israel’s continued rejection of the peace option, escalation of aggressive practices and violation of “the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people” only served to raise tension in the region and threaten international security and stability.
He further listed out Israel’s illegal and unjust measures — its continued efforts to build illegal settlements in Palestinian territories, confiscation of Palestinian land, use of excessive force against unarmed Palestinian civilians and the unjust siege on the Gaza Strip. These measures did not serve the cause of achieving a lasting and comprehensive peace in the Middle East, the Amir said.
Depriving the Palestinian people of their natural resources, restricting their freedom and desecrating the sanctity of Muslim and Christian holy place, especially the Al Aqsa msoque, threatening international security and stability, he added.
Qatar would continue to provide various forms of material and political support to the Palestinian people, the Amir said, noting the pledges announced by the country this year to provide urgent aid to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, which has been besieged for years.
The Amir’s speech pointed out that Qatar has increased its financial support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in view of the vital role undertaken by the agency since its establishment to secure the basic needs of millions of these refugees. He said Qatari funds helped the agency open its schools in the Palestinian territories this year on time, after a large funding deficit threatened their reopening.
The Amir said the celebration of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People affirms that the Palestinian cause is a priority for the international community.
National issues cannot be solved by subjecting them to the balance of power between the occupier and the occupied, the Amir said. They should be ironed out in accordance with principles such as the right to self-determination and inadmissibility of annexation of territories of others by force.
In his speech, the Amir saluted the steadfastness of the Palestinian people and their legitimate struggle against the brutal occupation.
