Driven by the surging urge for empowerment, a number of Ugandan women in Qatar gathered at Al Bidda Park where they received and shared amongst themselves tips on how to empower them in a male-dominated world.
The event titled ‘Women Empowerment Meet and Gain 1st Edition’ was the first since the launch of the Women Empowerment Programme under Ugandan Community in Qatar (UGACOQ) in October.
At the gathering, the women were enlightened and given tips on topics such as stress management, beauty enhancement, nutrition and diet, among others. The group had discussions about issues that women face in their day-to-day life.
The women also shared with one another their real-life stories to inspire and motivate others.
Besides, the women participated in a number of fun-filled activities such as aerobics, yoga, games, dance, among others aimed at raising awareness about the importance of physical activity.
Speaking during the event, UGACOQ Secretary Martha Anyait, who has been working on the Women Empowerment Programme, encouraged the women to do activities that will make them grow and move up the ladder. “Let’s not rest content with what we have now. There are times when many among us feel that they have a job and can take care of themselves, comfortable in the belief that’s all they need.”
Anyait urged the assembled women to think out of the box and do something extra and not just be comfortable with the basics of life. “It will be good when people see you grow. Do not remain content with where you are now. If you are comfortable, this will take you no further in life, and you will remain ordinary. So be ambitious.”
She urged the women to do something productive that will add to their salary and make their lives better.
Bearing in mind that the year is coming to an end, Anyait urged the women to have a plan for next year. “You need to have resolutions for next year. You need to develop yourself in life. People will be able to see your importance if you do something about yourself.”
She urged them to meditate on what they can do to make their lives better. “Ask yourself, what can I do? Start with little steps. Get advice from people.”
She told her country women to be aware of what is around them and take part in social activities that happen in Qatar. “Meet new people; associate with people who will add value to your life and be positive.”
The official urged the women to be weary of friends who would run them down.
Anyait said that such meetings provided a platform to share and learn from one another.
Anyait said that the group will be hosting such meetings regularly for the women to be empowered.
Another speaker, Nakimuli Grace urged the women to believe in themselves. She urged them not to be carried away by the perfect life that is being portrayed on the social media and look down upon themselves. “Try and trust yourself. Stop comparing yourselves with others.”
Talking about rejection, she said that many people have faced rejection in their lives therefore women should not allow any sort of rejection to demoralize them.
“This is a nice platform where we can learn new ideas,” she said.
Rose, another speaker enlightened the women on how to lead a positive life.
