Istanbul: A court in Istanbul on Wednesday issued an arrest warrant for exiled journalist Can Dundar for his alleged involvement in the 2013 Gezi protests and attempt to overthrow the government, according to state news agency Anadolu. The Istanbul chief public prosecutor’s office said that Dundar was linked to prominent activist Osman Kavala, who has been held in pre-trial detention for more than a year without charge. The prosecutor’s office accused Dundar of working with Kavala to“organise” and “spread” the Gezi protests, Anadolu added. Dundar, the former editor-in-chief of the secular government-critical
Cumhuriyet daily, fled to Germany in 2016 after being convicted of disclosing state secrets for publishing information on Turkish arms shipments to militants in Syria. He is currently facing a retrial in absentia after the Supreme Court of Appeals earlier this year overturned his sentence as too lenient and asked for him to be retried on charges of obtaining secret information for the purpose of spying.
