THE Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ opened a one kilometre long unidirectional tunnel with one lane at Gharrafat Al Rayyan Interchange along Al Luqta Street. The new tunnel, which forms part of Ashghal’s Dukhan Highway East project, facilitates direct free-flow connectivity from Gharrafat Al Rayyan to Doha.
According to the project engineer Abdulla Qasim, the tunnel will accommodate up to 2,000 vehicles per hour and ease traffic congestion at Gharrafat Al Rayyan Interchange for commuters travelling from Gharrafat Al Rayyan to Doha. Qasim said that the road users en route to Doha from Gharrafat Al Rayyan can expect travel time reduction of up to 30 percent.
The Public Works Authority recently opened a three-kilometre stretch of the main carriageway with four lanes in each direction along Al Luqta Street running from west of Tilted Intersection until after Gharrfat Al Rayyan Interchange after completing the last layer of asphalt.
In addition to the main carriageway, approximately three kilometres of parallel service roads with two lanes in each direction, were delivered providing efficient connectivity to Qatar Foundation, Sidra Medical and Research Centre and Qatar National Convention Centre.
To date, Ashghal has completed 75 percent of construction works on Dukhan Highway East project which is scheduled to be completed in Q3 of 2020. Upon completion, the project will deliver approximately 11.6 km of dual carriageway with four lanes in each direction.
During 2018, the Public Works Authority opened important sections of Khalifa Avenue Project, where it opened a 3 kilometre road as well as significant sections of the three-level Bani Hajer interchange. The complex interchange which replaced the previous roundabout accommodates approximately 1,500 vehicles per hour and provides free-flow traffic movements and is a key access to Dukhan Road, Al Luqta Street and Al Rayyan Road.
